Katharina Peetz is among the most sought‑after mezzo‑sopranos in the German‑speaking world and has built an impressive career as both an opera and concert singer.
Distinguished by numerous competition successes, scholarships and awards from various foundations, her career began at Zurich Opera House, where she was a member of the ensemble for eleven years and to which she remains closely connected as a regular guest. She has performed under conductors such as William Christie, Christoph von Dohnányi, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Adam Fischer, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Daniele Gatti, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Fabio Luisi, Franz Welser‑Möst, Michel Plasson, Stefano Ranzani, Ulf Schirmer, Nello Santi, Stefan Soltesz, Marcello Viotti and Ralf Weikert.
Her roles there included, among others, Erda, Medoro, Maddalena, Flora, the Third Lady, Hänsel, as well as numerous Handel and Wagner parts. Another permanent engagement took her to Dortmund, where she sang roles such as Adalgisa, Cherubino and Eboli.
Guest engagements have taken her to the Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, Aalto Theatre Essen, Teatro delle Muse Ancona, the Bregenz Festival, the Ruhrtriennale, Parma and London. With the Bayreuth cast she appeared at the Théâtre des Champs‑Élysées. She made her debut as Carmen at the Dorset Opera Festival in the south of England. Directors such as Willy Decker, Matthias Hartmann, Jens‑Daniel Herzog, Martin Kušej, Jürgen Flimm, Giancarlo Del Monaco and David Pountney have shaped her artistic development.
Her concert work includes Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder in Valencia, Handel’s Messiah in the Vatican, Bach’s St Matthew Passion in Hamburg, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in Mexico City and Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death in Japan. In Baden‑Baden she gave a solo recital featuring arias from Carmen, Die Fledermaus and Il barbiere di Siviglia. Her internationally performed repertoire spans major works of the concert literature from the Baroque to the modern era.
Her artistic output is documented in numerous radio and television recordings as well as CD and DVD releases (including Schreker: Flammen, Strauss: Die Liebe der Danae and Elektra, Mozart: Die Zauberflöte, Handel: Orlando).
She studied with Thomas Quasthoff, Carol Richardson, Judith Beckmann, Vera Wenkert and Heidrun Franz‑Vetter, and received additional guidance from renowned artists such as Christa Ludwig, Brigitte Fassbaender and Petra Lang.
